Hybrid cinematic–experimental work
INTO THE ENDLESS NIGHT
(2025)
A cinematic journey across human, machine, and bat intelligences.
STORY
Blending cinematic and experimental moving images, Into the Endless Night explores the interface between bat, machine, and human intelligences.
Researchers Maya (played by Ash Olivera) and Leandro (played by Esandres Morales) navigate the limits of their understanding while working with EECCOO — an artificial intelligence designed to mediate between the meaning spaces of humans and bats.
What begins as a confounding puzzle at the intersection of perception, language, philosophy, and technology evolves into a psychological and metaphysical encounter — as the effort to comprehend another species takes on a life of its own in Leandro’s psyche and through the AI’s unexpected transformation.
The film culminates in a mysterious, revelatory contact with non-human forms of intelligence.
PROJECT
The film’s installation at EPFL Pavilions as a large-scale projection with 7.1 surround audio heightens the sensory immersion of this interspecies exploration — situated at the intersection of speculative fiction, scientific research, and aesthetic experience.
Into the Endless Night forms Part I of Matthew C. Wilson’s ongoing Interspecies Interfaces series and was produced with the support of the Mondriaan Fund.
